When I was first diagnosed with genital herpes my doctor put me on Zovirax and that is what got me through my primary outbreak. Later on I went to my family doctor and he put me on Famvir because it was much more convenient to take than having to take five pills daily.

Eventually when I started to track my flare ups I tried Famvir and Valtrex at different times to see which one worked the best for me. I found that the Valtrex worked MUCH faster to heal and clear up my outbreaks. Eventually I decided that Valtrex would be what I would use for suppressive therapy. I was on suppression for two years with it and think that was probably the best thing I could have done for myself because when you aren't having outbreaks then you are not constantly reminded over and over that you have herpes.

To date ~ the only time I take Valtrex is if I have an outbreak OR if I need to be on suppressive therapy during the last six weeks of a pregnancy. 11+ years later I can honestly say that I don't have to take Valtrex quite as much as I did in the beginning because my flare ups (if I do get them) are quite mild if I even have one at all.

Ok, so that's my experience with Famvir. I would like to suggest that if you aren't sure which herpes antiviral is going to work best for your.. to just track your flare ups and try them all to see which one works best for you. The herpes antivirals that I know of that have been clinically proven to treat herpes simplex virus are: Famvir, Valtrex, and Acyclovir.

Good luck,

Angela :D
