This question was asked recently and I thought I would provide an answer to that so everybody would have a chance to get this figured out just in case you had the same question.
To add an avatar to your profile here's what you do:
1. Click on User Control Panel in the upper left hand corner of the main page
2. Click on the Profile tab
3. Click on the 3rd option titled Edit Avatar
You'll want to Link off-site and Enter the URL of the location containing the avatar image you wish to link to.
Make sure your avatar image is no bigger than 100 X 100.
I use Photobucket for my avatar hosting needs. It's free to create an account.
I also use Iconator.com to find new and cool avatars.
