Herpes Oral Sex
Oral
Sex when you have Herpes.
People write
in to ask me about oral sex and herpes all the time. I have done some
reading pertaining to oral sex when you have herpes. I have also formed my own little
opinion on the subject.
I promised somebody who wrote to ask me about
this last week that I would put some type of information out there so
people will have something to read on it because it's not something that
people talk about for some reason. I will do my best to explain what I
think about oral sex when you have herpes and in the meantime I hope
that you will do some reading, research, and don't be afraid to talk to
your own healthcare provider about this too.
I guess for
starters you kinda have to
know your status is when it comes to
herpes. It's helpful to know which location you have it and what type
you have. Now I have heard a lot of people come to me and say that their
doctor told them it doesn't matter. Or the nurse would say things like,
"herpes is herpes and it doesn't matter which type you have because it's
all the same." Well, I beg to differ and the reason I do is because of
oral sex. People with herpes want to know specifically if they can
continue to enjoy oral sex OR if there are extra special steps they can
take to
keep their partner safe OR if they have to give it up all
together. So the first thing you'll want to do as a couple is to know
your herpes status.
That brings
me to making a date to go and get tested together. Do that so you will
both know what you have. Go and get tested for ALL STDs and don't forget
to ask the
clinic or doc's office which STDs you are going to be tested
for. The reason it's important to ask is because not all places test for
ALL STDs. Over on my home
page I talk about this more towards the bottom of the page.
You'll see a list of things that you should be getting tested for and
hopefully Herpes as well as HIV are two STDs that you can get your
results on.
Once you
figure out
which type you have you'll begin to understand what you can
expect as far as oral sex goes. Now please keep in mind that I am not a
doctor. Everything I am sharing with you is based on my own personal
experiences, the experiences of those that have written to me, and lots
of years of posting about the subject on message boards.
If you were
lucky enough to have been able to have a culture done of a sore or
lesion that you got hopefully the doctor will instruct the lab to do the
extra typing test so that you will know if you have HSV-1, HSV-2, both,
or nothing at all. If you don't get outbreaks that you can see OR feel
then it's going to be important that you have a type specific
herpes testing done so you can figure out if you have HSV-1,
HSV-2, both or nothing at all.
Now I did put
together a page about
Herpes Type-1 and Type-2 but it doesn't really go into detail as to
what I think about oral sex. It just talks about the two different types
of Herpes Simplex Virus, where they can show up at, and how common OR
frequent the situations might be. Ok, so as promised here's what I think
about herpes and oral sex...
Hopefully
y'all know that by now you can contract and transmit herpes through
kissing, sex, oral sex, and yes even anal sex too. If somebody has Oral
Herpes Type-1 they can pass it on through kissing and oral sex if the
circumstances are just right and they actually have active virus on the
surface of their skin. The most popular form of oral herpes is HSV-1.
HSV-1 likes the oral area as well as the genital area which is why
people with genital herpes sometimes wind up with genital herpes type-1.
Oral sex plays a HUGE part in that.
People always
ask me, "What about my partner that doesn't have herpes? I have genital
herpes type-2. Is my partner going to contract it from me via oral sex?"
Well, I have always believed that Oral Herpes Type-2 is not all that
common. Sure, it's possible to contract oral herpes type-2 but even if
that were the case I have always been told by the experts that usually
the person might get one outbreak and then never again because HSV-2
just does not know what to do being located in the ganglia at the top of
the spine. Because of all this my husband and I have never worried about
him contracting HSV-2 from me via oral sex.
How's that
for getting down to the nitty gritty? ;)
If you feel
more comfortable (and you should) there are ways to protect yourself
even with oral sex coming into play in the bedroom. As far as protecting
yourself through the barrier methods there is plastic household wrap
that you can use to cover up the vulva. Make sure you keep your sex toys
clean and do not swap them out, back and forth, between the two of you
because the herpes virus can live on stuff like that and especially if
there is a warm and moist environment on the sex toy as well as the body
parts that the sex toy comes into contact with. (Yes people, I am
talking about sex toys.) If you want to share your sex toys make sure
you wash them with warm water and soap before taking turns.
Can I get herpes
simplex type-1 in two locations?
Let's Talk about Sex
- As more people write in to ask me about herpes and oral sex I will be
sure to add anything new that I have not covered to these pages. So be
sure and keep this one bookmarked so you will have it handy, ok?
