L-Lysine Comments and Feedback
L Lysine is supposed to be an all natural
product that people are finding over the counter or ordering online in
an attempt to treat the herpes simplex virus. If you have tried L Lysine
for herpes outbreaks please share your positive or negative experiences
about that product for posting on this feedback page. Send me your
comments and feedback along with your blessing to post on the site. All

Brand New L-Lysine
Feedback

Yoshi - I honestly have to tell you,
Lysine works. Bottom line.
I'm a little sketched out, to be honest, at your blatant
inability to see that something might work for someone when it
might not work for someone else. While I appreciate your ability
to play "Devil's Advocate", I think at some point enough is
enough. There is clearly enough information, both on the
Internet and in real life, to show that Lysine must have some
effect for some portion of the population. To think otherwise is
completely irresponsible and bogus. And please, it's spelled
"campaign," not "campagne." We are not drinking "Champagne." I
don't mean to put down your intelligence, but I do mean to put
you in your place a bit. Your self-righteous post is a bit
embarrassing.
Anyway, here's my
piece, I'm an MD and I have HSV-1. I've put myself on Valtrex,
but at the end of the day L-Lysine (1 gram, 3 times a day) has
worked just as well as expensive non-OTC drugs. As much as "
herpes.com" is clearly trying to sell Lysine, its amazingly
clear that you work for a pharmaceutical company. So please,
going forward, think before you speak. Thank you. - Gavin Watson
Note from Angela:
L-Lysine does very little for the herpes virus. If you are
already taking antivirals, it's just a waste of time and money
to supplement with L-lysine. Most people get more than enough
Lysine in their regular diets anyway! For the record, I do NOT
work for any pharmaceutical company - PERIOD!
Why I say supplements like
l-lysine are unproven.
Some anecdotal evidence supports they may have a modest benefit, but
they have yet to stand up to a properly controlled rigorous study. -

Abstract: Conventional antiviral drugs have proven
effectiveness for genital herpes; however, patients continue to use
a variety of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)
treatments. Given that patients may be using these products, it is
important that healthcare providers become familiar with the data
regarding safety and efficacy. We have reviewed available scientific
data on six commonly used treatments (echinacea, eleuthero,
L-lysine, zinc, bee products and aloe). In addition, information
about a number of other products is presented in tabular form.
Currently, there are insufficient clinical data to be confident of
the efficacy and safety of any of these products for the treatment
of genital herpes. It is hoped that future clinical trials will be
conducted with sufficient rigour to provide guidance to the patients
using these products.
Summarizing all the L-Lysine Studies - What do you think?
Hi - When I feel the first hint of a cold sore beginning, I take
3.5-4 grams of
L-Lysine along with 2 grams of vitamin C two to three
times a day for up to two days with the result that the cold sore
does not erupt. It will sometime cause some minor digestive
distress, but after three or four dosages as described, I'm cold
sore free until I eat too much chocolate or other food that
stimulates a recurrence. I have clients with genital herpes who I've
recommended the use of lysine to who report long term (8-10) months
so far being outbreak free. In addition, friends with shingles when
taking it in the dosage I described have experienced relief and a
shortened period of acne problems. I know it seems like a heavy
dosage, but that is the level I find that it works for me. - M
I suffered with continuous canker sores (herpes?)
outbreaks in my mouth plus pain with my tongue and left side of my brain for
years. I went to doctors, specialists, a chairman of a top medical school, and
medical experts only to get nowhere. I was miserable. No objective scientific
evidence was ever taken and lab tested. sigh.
So my solution after years of experimentation was:
(1) I took
l-lysine until the sores would not reappear. (This took months for
me.) I prefer
Herpanacine to just l-lysine but it's more expensive. It started working
within 1 day!!! Wow. (It works for my daughter's oral herpes too.) (2) I found
that I brush my teeth and gargle with baking soda it helps prevent reinfection.
Acid is somehow an issue. I sometimes suck on antacids. (3) I avoid acids -
vinegar, lemons, sodas with acid, and other sour things. The pains have
subsided. - S
Note from Angela: Canker Sores are not
the Herpes Simplex Virus. Canker Sores and HSV are two completely different
things. Also, too much L-lysine in your diet may be a problem. So, before you
go-to-town with the lysine be sure and check with your doctor first! L-lysine
has not been clinically proven by anybody to reduce asymptomatic shedding OR
transmission in uninfected partners. In fact, L-lysine hasn't even been proven
to be effective on herpes as far as I'm aware. If you know something I don't
please contact me and share the knowledge! Lastly, everybody is different. I'm
not going to say that L-lysine won't work because I do believe that it does help
some people. So, if your mind is made up just be sure and check with your doctor
first, ok?
When I started having outbreaks recently (9 years after my initial outbreak). I
reached for L-Lysine. I was hoping to cure naturally instead of going on
Suppressive Treatment. Well, I played with the dose (increasing) until I was
taking 6000mg daily (4 pills, 3 x a day) Well,
L-Lysine does not work. Not at
all. I am going to the DR this week to get on Suppressive therapy. - S
The only thing I have heard about
Lysine is that my
mother took it
for Shingles (also a herpes virus). She had a doc that swore by it and a diet of
NO Peanuts and NO Caffeine (Mom really believed those were almost deadly to a
person with Shingles). Finally after so much pain for so long, I talked her into
seeing another doc. She then went on an antiviral and felt better much quicker.
She's back to enjoying a life of Pepsi and Snickers - G
Lysine is a huge herpes myth. We have a copy of
a study in the files section via
Picking Up the Pieces which is very informative. Lysine has not been found to
heal ob's faster no matter what dose you take. If you take 1000mg 3 times a day
every single day it may decrease your ob's by 2 a year. None of the lesser doses
showed any effectiveness at decreasing the number of ob's you have each year.
Compare the price of taking that much lysine and having to take it 3 times a day
everyday and you can see that generic acyclovir taken 2 times a day is less
pills and actually cheaper and far more effective. Also there have been no
studies on lysine's effectiveness on reducing asymptomatic shedding. As we all
know no ob's does not mean not shedding the virus so if your partner is hsv2-
then you should consider antiviral therapy suppressively to reduce the chances
of transmitting the virus to that partner. All 3 antivirals have been shown to
significantly reduce viral shedding in general along with obvious ob's. - B
The
lysine and arginine connection
isn't a very strong one for most people. I look at it this way - if the vast
majority of people who have hsv2 have no idea they have it what are the chances
that they are eating a different diet that is keeping it under control? I would
think fairly slim don't you? Anyways the health benefits of eating high fiber,
whole grain foods is much, much more important than altering your diet to try to
control herpes. The healthier your body, the less outbreaks you are likely to
have. Would you rather have cancer and heart disease or a couple of herpes
outbreaks a year? I know I'd take my herpes over a colostomy or a heart attack
anytime. - G
Studies with
lysine have found that
it has no effect on shortening the length of outbreaks. When taken on a daily
basis (1000mg 3 times a day) it reduced the number of outbreaks in a year by
less than 1. There have been no studies on it's effects on asymptomatic
shedding. Am J Health Syst Pharm. 2001 Feb 15;58(4):298-300, 304. Related
Articles, Links "Lysine for management of herpes labialis." by Tomblin FA Jr,
Lucas KH. Is a good article that summarizes all the lysine and herpes studies
that have been done. If you can get a hold of a copy I recommend it (sorry can't
recall if there is a copy of it here in the pdf files or not). As far as the
safety of acyclovir I recommend this article “Valacyclovir for Herpes Simplex
Virus Infection” Long-Term Safety and Sustained Efficacy after 20 Years’
Experience with Acyclovir” by Stephen Trying, David Baker and Wendy Snowden The
Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2002;186:S40-S46 I'd trust it over some cold sore website any day. - G
L-Lysine has not really been
proven to do much for herpes simplex virus. You are better off sticking with a
herpes antiviral medication such as
Valtrex,
Famvir or
Acyclovir. - Angela
The scientific information on
Lysine is contradictory, some people find that it helps and others don't. -
