ABREVA - Have you tried it?

La La La La This guy tried Abreva on his herpes whitlow and it didn't work

La La La La My husband and I have been using Abreva for at least a year and a half. I have both types of herpes and It works great for both. I'm not sure its intended for use for genital herpes but it really does a good job. If I feel anything I just put it on there and often I do not get an outbreak. same for my husband. I'm not sure if the oral herpes is just a more aggressive virus or not but if I do get an outbreak when I have used abreva it's usually oral. and yes as a person mentioned previously the out break can happen on the side of where I had put the abreva but I don't blame abreva It seems to me to be the rascally virus, not abreva. So sometimes I put it on a larger area just to be sure. I do find this site helpful thanks to all who shared their experience. - C

La La La La Chap Stick makes a lip balm containing petroleum ingredients and is said to work just as well or better than Abreva.  Also Abreva is very expensive, it sells for about $16 for 4 oz. - W

La La La La Hi! I am on my 3 tube of Abreva! I Love it! Another thing that it will do... I have genital herpes also, when I start feeling a break out coming, I put abreva on it and guess what? NO OUTBREAK! It is great. I think that the people that say that it doesn't work are maybe not putting it on enough. I have a small cold sore now. I know that it is alot better than it would have been without it. - L

La La La LaI believe that Abreva helps me. It definitely stops the stinging/tingling a little sooner, I am not sure that it promotes healing. I just know that within 3 hours of applying it to an oral or genital lesion, the area begins to feel better. I do this with my Gyn's blessing, she has just told me not to use it internally. I do not know if it is the placebo effect or it really helps me, but it appears to really help me. For that reason, I will continue using it. - L

La La La La I used Abreva for my recent cold sore outbreak and am convinced that it spread it and made it worse this time.  I actually ended up with two different clusters of blisters on my lip rather than one, and one was more or less on my chin below my lip (and I have never gotten one there before). I must say, however, that years back I used Abreva and it seemed to work like a charm.  I think part of it may have to do with the timing of it.  If you put it on at the first sign (which almost means you need to have a tube always with you) then it works great, at least it did for me. - A

La La La La The results were ok not great but ok, what really upset me was that every time I went to use it a lot would come out of the tube and it would go to waste. About 80% was wasted because it would just come out I would tried to close the tube really fast but it would not work. So the money was not worth paying for it. Very annoyed by that - V

La La La La Not only did the Abreva not work for me - it made my situation worse. I saw better results when I stopped using it! - P

La La La La I used the Abreva for three days and it made my lips worse. I was hoping that it would work great because it cost so much! I wonder what kind of studies were done to make such great claims about it. I am going to try and return it. I am not satisfied with it. Thank you for your interest. - P

La La La La I used Abreva for 5 days and the results were not good. I am very disappointed in Abreva. I didn't mind spending the money for it, very costly, but with no results. I feel it was money wasted. I have now used another product and with just two applications I am getting results from the other product.

La La La La A coworker recommended Abreva and it's good. In three days my cold sore was a memory. If I had used it as soon as I felt the tingling the blisters would probably have never appeared. I haven't had another cold sore to test this on. (and I'm not complaining) The little tube (and I do mean little) costs about $15 but you can find it on sale for around $10. Hope this helps! - M

La La La LaAbreva seems to make my cold sores WORSE.  I have used lip balms with L Lysine in them that seem far more effective. - M

La La La La Yoshi2me - Thanks for your site and the information.  I've been struggling with accepting myself with genital herpes for a long time - going on 10 years now.  Your outlook is amazing and inspiring. Also - wanted to give a "thumbs up" to Abreva!  Totally recommend it.  For a year or so after I was diagnosed I was on Famvir.  I switched to daily Valtrex sometime later.  Even after switching doses over the course of about 6 years from 500 mg to 1gram, and back again, I still had outbreaks at least 4 times a year.  I went off daily Valtrex and took 500mg every 2-3 days just in case, but still had  at 3-4 outbreaks a year.  I finally broke down one morning after waking up to another painful outbreak and bought a tube of Abreva.  With Valtrex and Abreva, my outbreak was shortened and a lot less painful.  Now, whenever I have a tingle, twinge, or itch, I dab some Abreva.   I haven't had an outbreak for almost a year.  Thanks again for your support!  Please feel free to post my comments under the Abreva product review. - S
